machine, chummy-jigger ~ A substitue name for something that doesn’t come to mind right away; an unusal or unfamiliar object.
mackerel ~ The Atlantic mackerel (Scomber scombrus). Related to the tuna family of fish.
mackerel bird, mackerel gull ~ The Caspian tern (Hydroprogne caspia). More aggressive than the Arctic tern, or common tern, it ferociously feeds on small fish.

mackerel sky ~ High cloud patterns in bands or stripes.
macksie ~ Full of mud.
mad ~ Of the sea, windy and stormy. Of dangerous rocks, just below the surface, that are threatening. “Mad rocks.”; Sometimes referring to fish or mosquitos, swarming in large numbers; extreme “The weather is mad cold today.” Used in places and place names, for instance, Madrock Café, Bay Roberts, NL.
Madeira ~ Second-class fish (average) graded for colour, appearance, quality. Too much salt breaks the fish.
mad rock ~ The term given to a rock that rises out of the water where tides and winds turn the sea into a cauldron of foaming sea.
maeg ~ A butterfly.
mag, meg ~ The vertical stick used as the target in a game. Rings are tossed to encircle it. The game known as quoits.
maggoty ~ Coated in maggots, which are blowfly larvae that cover salted fish; someething in a large quantity.
magna teaberry, maidenhair, teaberry, manna teaberry, maiden’s tresses ~ The creeping snowberry. A white berry, whose leaves are used in folk medicine (Gaultheria hispidula).
magorey, johnny ~ The fruit or hip of the wild rose; the subject of a nonsense rhyme with a twist at the end, to entertain children.
Mahone soldier ~ Inferior seaman, a lazy person.
maid ~ A woman, unmarried girl or daughter. “I have two sons and three maids. One of the maids is married.”
maiden ~ A young woman or girl; a daughter.
maiden ~ Trees with curative properties due to growth, pruning, or sex.
maiden aunt ~ An unmarried aunt.
maiden dogberry tree ~ A dogberry tree that is believed to be curative.
maiden fir ~ A fir tree believed to have curative properties.
maidenhair ~ Wintergreen, teaberry (Gaultheria procumbens); the creeping snowberry (Gaultheria hispidula). These variations on the maidenhair plants and berries were commonly used to make tea, by various names: maidenhair tea (berry), maiden’s tresses (Gaultheria hispidula), magna tea (berry), maidner tea (berry), manna tea (berry) and probably mountaineer tea.
maiden ray ~ A small variety of the skate family of fish (Raja radiata).
maiden’s tresses ~ See maidenhair (Gaultheria hispidula)
maiden vein ~ The Milky Way
maid racket ~ Courting.
maid teacher ~ A female teacher who is not married.
mainland ~ The provinces of Canada, excluding Newfoundland and Labrador.
mainlander ~ One who lives on the mainland of Canada.
main patch ~ The primary concentration of harp and hooded seals on the ice floes.
main road ~ The primary road through a stand of trees, with sideroads to access trees for cutting.
main royals ~ Sails on the royal mast of a vessel.
main warp ~ On a deep-sea trawler, the wire between the net and the vessel.
make ~ To preserve cod by applying salt and then drying; of the tide, to rise; of the sea, to become rough and heave with a big swell; of ice, to form.
